living the life in Chiang May

So here I am again. I'm living and studying in Chiang May, just like that. I getting slowly used to the atmosphere here, and I have to say I am getting to like it. It's not the same as it was five years ago.

First of all, I am all alone and I walk the city a lot by feet or just taking taxies and tuk tuks. So on the way I have a lot of interaction with the Thai people, a lot more than I had in my previous time here. I like them. Thai people Have their pros and cons... First of all, they are very patience. To each other and to stranger. You should see how it works on the road: they are driving like crazy but almost nobdy horns, nobody curse, nobody gets mad. And get this: you almost dont see any car accidents at all. It's amazing! they are all so calm, like they say "I'm driving like a maniac, you're driving like a maniac, it's ok, let's be friends!" cool, huh? Another thing is the famous Thai smile. The smile in Thailand is a way to communicate, to talk, to get contact,. They smile and lough a lot. Sometimes, for forginers, it looks strange, like they're a little dumb, smiling all the time, but it's not true. And when you get into it, it's kind of fun - smiling, loughing. The problem with the Thais is that they get easly insulted, and when they do... it's like the end of the world. They can easly missinterupt a wrong gesture you made, and they will never talk to you again. And, if you managed to light their fuse... well then you can forget all what I wrote about their patience and kindness. They can get really mean, sometimes violent. You just have to be careful all the time not to hurt their feelings and honor, and the best way to do it is to learn their culture.

Chiang May is probably the most important city in Thailand, at least in the eyes of the Thai people. Back in Bangkok, whenever I told one of the locals that I'm going to Chiang May,, they instantly had a big smile on their face and they gave me the "thumb up" motion. They consider it as the center of Thai culture and beauty. I can understand them. Chiang may has it's own pace, it's own atmosphere that you need to learn slowly. The biggest problem however is the amount of veichles on the roads. It wasnt like that five years ago.I remembered Chaing May as a very quiet and calm city, and now I cant avoid the unbelivable number of cars passing in front of my eyes. A lot of them are new cars, 4X4 vehicles, european cars, japanese cars. It seems like Chiang May joined the rest of big western cities and every body wants their own car. Well I cant blame them, but... the air here got so polluted by all of this traffic. It's a big shame.

I am advancing in my massage course. We begin every class with a one hour yoga excersice, and then learning new postures and treatments. Doing Thai massage is hard but it is rewarding to the body - it gives it a lot of reflexebility and vitality. I am also practicing tai chi in the park and trying to keep in shape, so you can say I'm working quit hard. But I enjoy it, I enjoy challenging my body.

Well I have a lot more to write, about the people from the course, the Thai food, the great night bazar. But I has enogh for this time.

Take care

Yours - kvod hanasi
